Are you constantly looking in the mirror and cataloging your flaws? Or do you ever find yourself reaching for a Snickers bar, cookies, or a glass of wine when you are really just bored, tired, or heartbroken? Do you ever skip a meal so you can “fit into that dress” you want to wear this weekend or because you are “fat” and need to lose a few pounds?
The truth is that most of us have done one or all of these things before, if not regularly. We have been well-trained from a very early age to know that when you do something well or right, your deserve a reward—a reward that usually comes in the form of a sweet treat. When we are grieving, people send us food—lasagnas, casseroles, bread—all of the extremely comforting and high in guilt stuff we love to hate. We do not all have eating disorders, but many of us are disordered eaters. This simply means that our relationship with food and our bodies is unhealthy and not good for us.
Have you ever wished to stop hating your body or to feel in control of your eating—knowing when and being able to stop?
Yoga book club for disordered eating is a new group forming at the Atlanta Counseling Center that is aimed to do just that: help you redefine your relationship with both your body and your food. In her book, “Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling,” Anita Johnston will help us to reconnect with our most truest selves, leading us back down a path where we can trust our own inner voice and begin to love ourselves fully again.
In this unique book club experience, we will take our biggest topics discussed (i.e. fear, shame, letting go, anger, etc.) and channel that on our yoga mats. We will use sequences and poses to facilitate working through the things holding us back and keeping us small and in bad relationships with food. Trauma, physical and emotional pain are all stored in our bodies. Yoga is a tool to deeply release and heal emotional, physical, and psychological pain.
Come join Emily Lorin Saturdays from 9-1030am beginning September 12th for this six-week experience.
